Gooseberries - George Markham Tweddell

Gooseberries.
I like a good-sized luscious Gooseberry,
So feel I owe a debt of gratitude
Unto those humble men who were imbued
With taste to cultivate it. Give their sherry
To those who can afford it, only leave 5
To me abundance of fine rich ripe fruits;
For such, methinks, with health much better suits,
And never can the mind of sense bereave
When indulged in most freely. I would weave
A garland for each man of Lancashire, 10
Whether he be the son or be the sire
Of those whose great improvements soon did leave
The small fruit far behind, and have at least
Produced us three-fold better for each feast.
